"Then This One pities you, for you have nothing at all." Mantis regarded the maimed Darth Vader with pity. Suddenly, her eyes widened as she saw a nearby set of potted marigolds. The enigmatic woman bent low and looked thoughtfully at the flowers.

Mantis nodded her head, as if hearing words with which she agreed. After several seconds, Mantis stood upright again. "The flowers spoke with This One. They told her of the suspicious whispering among you. She learned a great deal of the troubles among you--as if she hadn't already sensed the doubts and fears which trouble you. We must steel our spirits and approach Doom's challenge with clarity of mind, if we ever hope to survive."

Kassad: You still don't have proof that The Shrike if the traitor. He gains nothing from killing you. He'd rather hang you all on the Tree of Pain while you're still alive. Also, the corpse on the Tree of Pain proves THe Shrike isn't the killer. The Shrike only puts live victims onto the tree, to feed on their pain. THe tree keeps them alive. A corpse cannot feel pain so The Shrike would never put a corpse on the Tree of Pain.

Jade noticed Mantis, the only one who voted against him last round. Feeling the need to explain himself, he stated:

"Once again, even creating a shell of a person take considerable time and resources. It would take me weeks before I could even create a copy, not to mention the training that would be needed. I could not simply point at someone and say 'kill'. It would take months probably to get their power potential to its fullest, not to mention teaching it to obey to me absolutely."

Mantis listened with her full attention as Jade spoke. Her exotic face remained impassive as the military officer explained himself. If Mantis felt one way or another about Jade's words, her face never showed it. Finally, when he'd spoken his piece, the Celestial Madonna replied.

"Your words seem logical and sincere. Perhaps you speak the truth? However, This One knows from her experiences in the world that vicious killers may hide their intentions behind pretty words and pleasant smiles. This One remains convinced that you must be watched closely." Addressing the others, Mantis said, She still votes for Jade."

Columbo looks through his notes "Excuse me Mr. Vader. Looking through my notes it seems that you were the last person to see Batman alive. I heard you say he was your friend, but you hardly new him. The last time I saw BAtman you and him were walking off together. It could be that you were taking him somewhere to kill him. I'd hate to send another innocent person away, but Darth Vader I'm gonna have to vote for you.

Ukyo stared at the enigmatic woman called Mantis. She appeared to know more about everyone than she was letting on.

"Mantis, why are you voting for Jade? What do you know about him? You seem to know a lot about us."

She wondered if Mantis could read her mind. She hoped not. She didn't want anyone to know yet that she had voted for Shrike largely because of a bad dream. At the time, Ukyo had believed it was one of those 'special' dreams that steer one in the right direction. Now, she wasn't so sure. Maybe all it was was just a bad dream brought on by her fear. She still couldn't believe anyone could actually team up with Shrike. That thing just didn't seem like a team player to her.

Ukyo turned her attention back to Mantis. "If there's anything you can tell us about anyone, please let us know."

tangentman 01-21-2007 12:20 AM

Mantis laughed good-naturedly and offered Ukyo a reassurring smile. "While This One has many gifts, reading minds is not one of them. She learns about others by observation and her empathy."

While Mantis offered Ukyo a reassuring smile, Ukyo was disconcerted by her response. If she couldn't read minds, how did she know what Ukyo was thinking? She had never asked Mantis if she could read minds.

Maybe Mantis didn't read her mind, but the expression on her face. Mantis claimed to learn things by 'observation and her empathy'. She also claimed that flowers spoke with her.

"Okay." said Ukyo. "Maybe you're keeping your reasons for voting for Jade secret for now. I guess if you're looking for the 'brains' of the Traitor outfit, he's as good a guess as any. He does seem to make some good arguments, though."

"I'm still not sure what the story is with Vader. He's been acting really, really weird. I'm not even sure I know who it is under that helmet anymore."

Ukyo decided she was not going to be the one to tell Vader that Batman had lied to him.

MK, after having not said much recently, decided to chime in.

Frankly, since it's not much use to change my vote, I'm gonna have to stick with the Shrike. I mean, even if he wasn't part of the Doom Squad, he's still a danger to us all. Also, we haven't heard much from some people lately, and I'm getting a bad feeling about this. The Hulk hasn't said anything, and neither has power girl. Prez has also been rather quiet lately. Well, I'll keep watch.

"Come to think of it, I don't think we ever found that nervous British guy. I hoped my offer of tea would flush him out of hiding, but it didn't work. I think Darth Vader was the last one to see him."

Just then, she heard a noise from another room. It sounded like a conversation. She went into the corridor, and listened to what was going on in the room across the corridor from the Media Room.

"Come now or you will be late." a voice was saying. Ukyo went in to see who was talking to who.

The room was empty except for an old-small screen TV, completely inferior to the DMAX screen in the Media Room. The TV was turned on. On the screen, Ukyo could see the nervous British guy talking to an old man.

"Late? What for?" the nervous British guy asked the old man.

"What is your name, human?" the old man asked.

"Dent. Arthur Dent." the nervous British guy replied.

"Late, as in the late Dentarthurdent." the old man said, trying to sound stern. "It's a sort of threat you see. I've never been very good at them myself, but I'm told they can be very effective."

Ukyo noted a DVD player connected to the TV, and nearby a DVD case. According to the box, what was now playing was a mini-series called 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'. Who had set up the DVD and then left while it was on? Ukyo had no idea. At least now, she knew the British guy's name.

She returned to the Media Room where many were still gathered. "It was nothing. Someone just left a DVD running in the room across the hall."

"Anyway, who else haven't we heard from in a while? What about that Luffy that Spider-Man voted for? I don't think we've heard from him since before Batman was killed, either."

So DOOM YOU HEAR ME??? LORD VADER GETS MY VOTE! Now, where'd I put that Guinness?"

Ukyo shook her head. "Vader, that's not what your legend says at all. Your legend says that you treasured friendship UNTIL you became seduced by the Dark Side of the Force. Then you turned against your friends and your Jedi comrades. Your teacher and closest friend Obi-Wan was forced to fight you."

"He really didn't want to fight you, by the way. I could tell it was probably one of the hardest things he ever had to do in his life. He did it because he felt he had to, not because he wanted to. He tried to bring you back from the Dark Side, but you wouldn't listen to him. In the end, you got badly sliced up and then burned by lava. After that, you never really treasured friendship again. You became a cold, emotionless machine."

Ukyo paused. "That is, if you're the same Darth Vader the movies told me about. You've been acting so emotional I don't know who you are anymore. I don't really know what to make of your behavior."

"For what it's worth, though, you're far from the only one who could have pushed down that statue. The Hulk or Power Girl or Dr. Strange could have done it, too. And unless Dr. Doom himself set up that Tree of Thorns thing, then I can only think of two people who might have the abilities to send people there. The Shrike and Dr. Strange."

"I don't know. The best argument against the Shrike is that he only puts still-living victims on that horrible tree -- what kind of sick person comes up with stuff like that, anyway? Anyway, he's either being set up, or he made an exception in this case. I don't know which."

ok, guys. i'm just givin' a quick recap on the people who I feel haven't done much participating lately.

Deadpooligan - Beta Ray Bill Young Avenger - Chris Jericho Legato - Power Girl Kholdhearted - Hulk BYC - James Bond Pheonix-NoRelation - Spider-Man Spidey-kid1 - Luffy kain5252 - Dante GrimShadow - Arthur Dent Nomad – The Monarch

this is getting ridiculous. Someone should PM them, cause this game is very uninteresting with only about 4 or 5 people actually playing the game.

OOC: I have to agree that it's getting ridiculous. 23 players still on the 'active' list, and nine or ten of them have been quiet. To be fair, Pheonix-NoRelation HAS posted in this round, voting for Luffy. But some of these people (Legato, BYC, GrimShadow in particular) haven't posted since the Introduction. Nomad hasn't posted since the signup phase, and Kholdhearted posted saying his computer was down, but hasn't gotten into the game so far.

Actually, it's more than just 4 or 5 people. Just about everyone not on your list has been contributing one way or another. And right now, the vote seems to be tied with 5 votes for Shrike and 5 votes for Darth Vader, with one vote each for Luffy and Jade. So I'd say from a voting perspective, 12 people have been participating in this round so far.

EDIT: And from a storytelling or whatever perspective, Superheroic and Anthony Johanson have contributed notes in which their characters voice their suspicions, even if I don't think either has formally voted. So that's 14 people participating.

"I don't like traitors either. Of any kind." Ukyo replied. "The problem is, we're in a situation where we can't trust anyone. It's hard to make friends under these conditions."

"Vader, I hate to break it to you, but if Batman thought you might be one of the Doom Squad, he probably would have been one of the first to vote for you. He struck me as another one of those sorts who will do what he has to in order to save lives. Like Obi-Wan..."

Ukyo changed the subject slightly. "No one's voted for Dr. Strange yet. While he could have framed the Shrike, he was one of the first to defend him -- not counting that Colonel Kassad. Kassad's acting like the Shrike's lawyer or something, even though he says they're mortal enemies."

"So that means either two things. Either Dr. Strange is not one of the Doom Squad and genuinely believes the Shrike is being set up, or they're both Doom Squad members."

Jade mulled over all the possible evidence given. He still doubted it was Vader due to the Vivisection requiring blood loss, something Vader's Lightsaber did not have. Sure, he could have another weapon doen it, but he doubted that was Vader's plan of action. Now narrowed down on one suspect, he stated:

"Despite the 'living victims on the tree of pain' statement, I vote Shrike."

"I guess that breaks the tie, then. It's now seven votes for Shrike." Ukyo said.

"Everything I've heard about the Shrike tells me he only puts living victims on that 'Tree of Pain'. But my sources might have left out a few details. We don't even know whose idea using the tree was. It may have been the Doom Squad's or it may have been Doom's. Maybe the Shrike DID kill Kabuto, and then Doom decided to send both the bodies to the Tree of Thorns, and then they had a heated argument over it afterward. Maybe Shrike...or Kassad...told Doom that he was missing the whole point of the Tree of Pain, as he calls it."

"I'm just guessing, here. We don't really know what goes on behind the scenes. I wish the Vigilante was still with us. Then we could be rid of two suspects in one round. Maybe we could have gotten lucky and gotten rid of two Traitors. Then there'd be 21 of us with only one more Doom Squad member to find. This WAS going to be the round where the Vigilante made his first kill, but that's not going to happen now."

Ukyo sighed. "Vader, as they say in your universe, I've got a bad feeling about this. I'm sticking with the Shrike, because he's still a good suspect. But I can't shake the feeling that I'm missing something...something important."

I roused from my slumber only to find the same setting. The players were still arguing and a few were still selecting Shrike. As I walked back to the room with the group, I made a slight detour to see the voting tally on one of the walls. If I had been Archimedes, I might have exclaimed, "Eureka!"

I charged into the room and made sure to have everyone's attention.

"Fellow players, something has come to my attention. Many of you are accusing the Shrike. This is clear. Due to the overwhelming suspicion, would it be safe to assume that the Secret Avengers made him at least one of their guesses? I believe so. Neither of their guesses was correct.

"I believe that Shrike, like myself, is innocent of these crimes. I also believe that given the amount of people voting against the man-machine the Squad has framed hurts all of us. It is only a matter of time before they determine who amongst us is a Secret Avenger."

After taking in Dr. Strange's statement, Ukyo stared at the sorcerer.

"I'm assuming that each member of the Secret Avengers knows who the other one is. And I'm assuming each member of the Doom Squad knows who the others are."

"I guess this is the bad feeling I've had all along." Ukyo said. "The Shrike might be to this game what the Joker was to the last game. The one that's just too obvious. I wasn't there, but so many people just jumped and voted for the Joker, because the method of death fit in with his warped sense of humor. Cologne tried to get them to consider other suspects, but he ended up getting banished anyway. And guess what? He wasn't one of the Traitors."

"I guess I should come clean with you all right now." Ukyo said. "I voted for Shrike because I had a nightmare. I dreamed that Shrike was going on a killing spree, killing many of you, and killing many of my friends and enemies from back home. I thought that might be a 'special' dream, telling me who I should vote for. But now I'm not sure."

"The Shrike scares me. I'll admit it. I want that thing sent back to its own world where it belongs. I want to be in a world where the Shrike is nothing more than the product of some writer's sick imagination. But now I'm not sure if banishing him's the right thing to do."

"I'm thinking of changing my vote." Ukyo said. "But I don't know who I should vote for. Darth Vader seems like a good suspect for all the murders so far, but I'm not convinced enough to vote for him yet."

Ukyo nodded. "It is strange that he hasn't shown up. Maybe he's upset that his Vigilante didn't get to kill anyone. Maybe's he's out throwing a hissy fit because the Tribunal and Doom won't let him appoint a replacement Vigilante or something."

"There's still okonomiyaki, but that kitchen has enough ingredients for us to make just about anything." Ukyo headed off with Moon Knight to the dining room and kitchen area.

Once there, she reached into her pocket. After she had rested, she had found a letter addressed to her on the night stand in her quarters. She had been in too much of a hurry to read it before. "Best to do it now, I guess." she said to herself. "Who knows what's going to happen a few hours from now?"

The letter read as follows:
Ukyo, if you are reading this, then either the Living Tribunal or the Rogue Watcher has come through for me, and transported this letter to your quarters at Castle Doom. I pray that you are safe. Rest assured that Ranma and the rest of your friends are safe and sound. I shall do all I can to protect them.

Another player from the previous Traitor Game came to visit me last night. That enigmatic Burger King mascot appeared in front of me when I was returning to the Nekohanten, and offered me an Angus burger. He then left just as suddenly as he arrived. He may show up again. If he does, I intend to ask for his assistance.

He may not have been a good listener in the Game, but I think he will listen to me now. For one thing, I was not one of the people who voted for his banishment in the Game. For another, I am sure that he will want to save all our universes just as much as I do. If Dr. Doom were to succeed in usurping the power of the One Above All, the restaurant chain the King works for will probably be abolished, and so will McDonald's and all other international fast food chains. Knowing Dr. Doom, he will probably have them all replaced with an international Latverian Meatloaf restaurant chain. Once I explain this to the King, I am sure he will help me.

I intend to reach Donna Troy and her friends in the Justice League, and the Hulk and Tony Stark in their world. I am sure that once the Hulk and Tony Stark realize just what Dr. Doom is doing, they will put aside their differences. The King may or may not be able to help me reach those other dimensions, or send messages. In any case, I feel the fate of the multiverse is too important to be decided by one of these Traitor Games, so it is best to have some sort of backup just in case you fail to defeat Dr. Doom.

Ukyo, you are probably confused and scared now. All I can do is advise you not to give in to fear, for it can cloud your judgement. Do not jump to the obvious conclusions, or let others mislead you into voting for the wrong person. Think carefully about who may or may not be the Traitor, for it may not be the one everyone else thinks it is.

Ranma misses you and hopes you return home soon. You are in all our thoughts and prayers.

The Elder Cologne of the Joketsuzoku
Ukyo just let the letter sit there at her place on the dining room table. "I've been bad at following that advice so far, haven't I?" she said. "I'm sorry, Cologne."

Ukyo looked around, to see if anyone else besides Moon Knight had come to get a bite to eat. She addressed Moon Knight again.

"Moon Knight, you've been in these Traitor Games before. Have you ever felt like you just didn't know what to think, who to believe? I don't know what to make of Dr. Strange's defending the Shrike. I think there's something he's not telling us. I think I might have even figured out what it is he's not telling us, but I'm afraid to say it out loud. I just wish I had some way of knowing who the good guys or the bad guys were."

"Someone's trying to trick us. I know that much. I just wish I knew who."

OOC: Please note that Cologne's referring to the Hulk who was with her in the previous game. As a different person is playing the Hulk in this game, it may or may not be the same Hulk. By the way, Kholdhearted, you can start participating any time now. That 'stasis field' thing was just an explanation as to why the Hulk and Monarch hadn't been active in the game so far. Either can emerge from it and join in at any time.

"I think that's what Cologne's trying to tell me in this letter." Ukyo said, showing the letter to Mantis. "The problem is I try, but I don't think the wisdom within me is saying it loud enough."

"It's not just our lives that are at stake here. If we vote off one of the Secret Avengers by mistake, things will be even worse. There are still three Traitors, and we can't afford too many more mistakes. If only Wolverine hadn't decided to be a Traitor's Helper..."

"Dr. Strange may genuinely believe the Shrike's innocent, or he might be the Shrike's cohort in the Doom Squad. Dr. Doom said he picked the killers at random, so for all we know, he could have just picked one who's bad at making his kills ambiguous. Or maybe the Shrike IS being set up after all."

"You still haven't explained why you voted for Jade. I don't really know much about him, except that he's some sort of scientist from some alternate future or something who can create bodies or something like that. What led you to believe he had anything to do with the murders?"

Anthony Johanson 01-21-2007 06:20 PM

Jade stared across the room. Strange had raised a convincing point, maybe a bit too convincing. Speaking up again, Jade said:

" My vote stands either way. I know Kassad has given some level of evidence to the contrary, but the Shrike has shown a level of unneeded aggression. That point being hacking off Vader's arm when he force pushed him, seemed a bit excessive, didn't it?

Once again, I will take responsibility in my part if he is not a traitor, but in these games, sometimes these things happen."

Captain America had been quiet after his speech in the morning. He had done some thinking. He knew Shrike was the obvious choice, but was he guilty of being in the Doom Squad?

Cap spoke up to the others. "I've given it a lot of thought. The evidence is too strong not to vote for the Shrike. Even though I feel he is being setup, he is an evil death machine and we are better off without him here."

OOC: As to the issue of player participation. I agree that it is frustrating. If anyone wants to play and not roleplay, that's perfectly acceptable to me. But at least make an effort to vote. I know real life issues crop up so I'm fine with minimal playing. Just vote though.

"I guess it's settled then. Eight votes for Shrike, five for Darth Vader, and one vote each for other people." Ukyo said. "Did I miss anything?"

Ukyo turned to Colonel Kassad. "I don't envy you at all. You said you might have to fight that thing some day. I wish you luck because you're going to need it. But I'll tell you this much."

"Kassad, in my dream, the Shrike had killed a dozen people right in front of me. Some of them were people who were better fighters than I am. Then he came for me. When he did, I raised my battle spatula to defend myself, even though I knew I didn't stand a chance. And I know why I did it, too. When there's nowhere to run, and the enemy's going to get you, it's best to go out fighting. I'm sure Captain America will understand that."

"Kassad, if you fight the Shrike, I don't know if you can possibly make it out of there without getting killed or sent to that awful tree. But you should give it your all. Never give up, no matter how hopeless your situation seems to be."

Ukyo then laughed. "Look at me. I'm such a hypocrite! Telling other people not to give up when I've been so frustrated..."

She turned to Captain America. "I guess you're right. Since we don't have any way of knowing who's tricking us, we might as well just banish the Shrike and hope for the best. I just hope this isn't another Joker incident."

Cap put his hand on Ukyo's shoulder. "I am hoping for the best. But I'm happy with my decision. If I knew the Shrike was a benevolent entity, then I might worry about sending it to Limbo. But it isn't and I won't take the chance of it harming any more of us."

"You know, that sounds like how Cologne made her peace with everyone else's decision to vote out the Joker. She thought the Joker was too obvious, but she decided that if he had to be banished, it'd be for the best. She said that while other super-villains present like Dr. Doom and Lex Luthor still had their genius, the Joker had nothing to offer but madness."

"I don't really know what the Shrike could offer us, really. Though he would have made one heck of a Vigilante!" Ukyo said, with a smile.

"If he's not one of the Doom Squad, we probably are also doing them a favor in another way. We're probably saving them from racking their brains trying to figure out a way to kill that thing! I would have loved to see how they might have pulled it off. But I guess we'll never know, now."

OOC: Sorry about the inactivity, been busy with work and finals lately, but they're over now.

Beta Ray Bill looked at the argument before him. Everyone was in a frenzy of argumenting, even the good Doctor Strange.

Yet, he was still deliberating whom to choose. He knew little of the others, but his suspiscions grew.

"Aye. I recall something like this before. Two teammates, verily working together, give the appearance as rivals!"

Bill spun Stormbreaker and hit the floor to gain attention, then pointed it at the crowd.

"Tis the black-armored one and the knived beast! They art working together! Dost thou not see it?"

Bill figured he'd have to eliminate one of the two. He thought his vote.

The Shrike seems to be the more powerful of the two. The knaves shall fall.

OOC: The Shrike speedblizes everyone to death :D

IC: Kassad: "well, you guys just wasted another banishment. Good job. The killers get another chance to kill an another innocent one gets banished. Since The Shrike is gonna leave anyways, I'll just reveal that is in fact, NOT part of Dr. Doom's squad. The Shrike listens to no one. Just ask the few thousand victims hanging on the Tree of Pain.

Also, he's decided to amuse himself by trying to STOP the traitors. Since you guys are hell bent on getting rid of him, he's decided to leave this mansion via Freecasting."

"You think the Shrike and Darth Vader are working together?" said Ukyo with surprise. "I don't know, but it doesn't seem all that likely."

"Of course, that whole incident with Vader's arm could be a coverup. Anyway, I thought it was more likely that Shrike was working with someone else. Someone who didn't vote for him."

"Then again, when I voted for the Shrike, I said even the Traitors weren't safe from him. Maybe they took me seriously, even if he IS one of the Doom Squad. That whole thing with the vivisection and the Tree of Thorns can only mean one of two things. One, the Shrike is being set up. Or two, he DID kill Kabuto, but Doom or the other Doom Squad members have decided it's best he 'take one for the team' or something like that."

"It's not like he's indispensable, after all. The Doom Squad can confuse us just as easily with two members as they could with three. But if we're right about the Shrike, they probably won't give us a free banishment next time. We'll have to really work hard to figure out who the other two members are."

Kassad: Well, you're wrong. The Shrike isn't The traitor. Hell, he even impaled the older version of Dr. Doom onto his Tree of Pain to prove it. But I can be sure that The Shrike WILL kill you all if you try to banish him. He usually doesn't like to be backstabbed by the people he's helping.

"Nay, Ukyo. In my apparent absence, I hath browsed Doom's library and located literature concerning these so called "Traitorous Games". It would appear that Doom had studied the prior games organized by the Beyonder, a Rogue Watcher, and the Monitor before making his own. There have apparently been five prior to this one.

Bill retrieved one of the volumes (it's trade paperback!), aptly titled "Traitor Games: Volume 4".

"Verily, it would appear Rorschach and Captain Universe had a feud early on, yet worked as a team with Black Bolt, ultimately leading to a dual backstabbing and the team ending in failure. I expect no less from these two."

"Why do you care, Kassad?" Ukyo asked. "You were going to fight this thing with your army. Your army was probably going to get slaughtered fighting that thing. If we give the Shrike to Immortus, we could probably persuade Immortus to have it imprisoned forever. Wouldn't your universe...or ANY universe, for that matter...be better off without the Shrike?"

Ukyo sighed. Though she knew what she had just said was the truth, she knew what she had to do. This was going to be difficult. "I hope this is the only time I have to do this. But I think Kassad and Dr. Strange just might be right. The Shrike's the Joker of this game. I can't vote for him anymore. Even though it probably won't make a difference, I'm changing my vote."

"I'm voting for Darth Vader. He could have done all three murders. He might have had help from the other Doom Squad members with Batman's murder, but he could have killed both Kenshiro and Kabuto all by himself. A true master of the Force like Vader could easily crush someone with a statue. And he probably didn't use his lightsaber, but he could have used the Force to move all sorts of sharp objects into the air."

"Then there's the fact that he was the last person to see that 'Dentarthurdent' or whatever his name is. For all we know, Vader killed him, too, and Doom just hasn't shown us that movie yet."

"I know I led the call to vote against Shrike, but I can't be a part of it anymore. Go ahead and banish him if you want. He can rot in Limbo forever for all I care. But I don't think he's the killer anymore."

RUMINATIONS: Admittedly, that whole DVD thing was a contrivance. But I needed some way for Ukyo to know the name of a character whose player was inactive.

Coming up, the end of the voting round, with a twist I'll admit I didn't see coming. The Presentation continues in Part 11.
